Age: 9 From: County Durham
Sophie at just 9 years old, has walked 33 miles across the Scottish Borders in less than two days to raise money for her local Scout Group, of which she had only actively been involved for less than six months. The impact that joining Cubs had on Sophie was significant and she wanted to do something special to thank her leaders (as well as the organisation locally).
The challenge Sophie undertook was a significant physical and mental challenge that required physical preparation and learning skills such as map reading and emergency aid. This did not just develop Sophie as a person, but also gave her the ability to help others in a crisis.
During the fundraising, preparation and the hike itself, through a dedicated Facebook event page, it was commented that Sophie had been an inspiration to other children within the Scouting movement nationally. Sophie set herself a target of £100, however this ended up being £400. This money may contribute towards the Scout Group’s fundraising for a minibus to allow easier access to trips and camps.
Sophie’s determination and commitment to giving something back by walking 33 miles is both indicative of her passion, and is testimony to the enduring appeal of the Scouts.
